Amid huge interest in creating and refashioning things, a desalination plant in Jeddah is being transformed into a museum. The museum would explore the links between the city’s industrial heritage from the time of King Abdulaziz to the present day. 

According to Jeddah Central Development Company, the museum, set to open in 2028 and part of the Jeddah Central Project, will offer a “rich experience” to illustrate the desalination process in its historical and scientific elements.

As part of the contract for engineering and architectural designs with the British architecture firm Heatherwick Studio, a sizable cultural center will be built on the project’s waterfront.

The $20 billion plan to develop 5.7 million square meters of the port city includes an opera house, a museum, a sports stadium, and coral farms.

It will also feature a marina, restaurants, beach resorts, 2,700 hotel rooms, and 17,000 homes in the kingdom’s second-largest city.

The desalination plant’s final two chimneys were shut down in 2020 due to environmental concerns.
