UAE launches drive to ensure youth play a central role in COP28
The UAE has announced that it will be sponsoring the attendance of 100 international youth delegates at the upcoming COP28
Eco-anxiety is increasing among the young. Studies have found that over 70% of those under 18 believe climate change is a global emergency. In light of these facts, it’s only fitting to tap into the power of young people for climate action. Â
As part of its efforts to prioritize youth involvement in addressing climate change, the UAE has announced that it will be sponsoring the attendance of 100 international youth delegates at the upcoming COP28 climate summit in Dubai.
“The UAE is leading an effort to place young people at the forefront of the battle against climate change,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and President-designate of COP28, at Expo City Dubai.Â
Announcing the International Youth Climate Delegate Programme for COP28, Al Jaber said the initiative will focus on least-developed countries and small island states and give “all participants the training, resources, and opportunity to advocate on behalf of their countries and communities.”Â
The program will be managed by the COP28 Youth Climate Champion team and Youngo, the youth branch of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to ensure that youth viewpoints are central to global policy-making and serve as a model for future COP meetings. The selected participants will have a front-row seat to climate negotiations, a deeper understanding of the COP process, and will be able to participate in the critical talks.Â
Applicants must be between 18 and 35, have a demonstrated commitment to climate issues, and preferably have experience in the field. The application period began on Wednesday and will close on April 7th. Interested individuals may apply on the COP28 website.
