According to a new report, the UAE is the environmental sustainability leader, by most key measures, across the Gulf and Africa.

The new Agility Global report tracks government and business policies, practices, and investments related to the environment. The report examined the performance of 17 MEA countries in terms of environmental sustainability outcomes, government policies, and corporate practices. South Africa and the UAE led as the top-performing countries in their respective regions and overall.

The report highlights the UAE’s “strong base” in green investment, innovation, and technology spearheaded by the government. However, it identifies an opportunity for businesses to contribute more to private sector innovation and investment.

Several key areas showcase the UAE’s environmental leadership, the first of which is the country’s infrastructure and transport. Investments in mass transit, electric vehicle charging stations, and cleaner port infrastructure are commended.

The UAE has also implemented stricter regulations for climate financing and net-zero reporting while expanding nuclear and solar energy capacity. Environmental protection is prioritized, with initiatives focused on air quality, water conservation, and mangrove protection.

Lastly, the UAE is praised for innovations in waste circularity and its 2024 ban on single-use plastics.

The report commends the “strong collaboration” between the UAE’s government and private sector in implementing environmental sustainability goals. While acknowledging areas for improvement, including green finance and energy market accessibility, the report concludes that the UAE is well-positioned to maintain its regional leadership.

The report highlights the country’s leadership in green hydrogen pilot projects and its sustainability startup accelerator, Catalyst. It also emphasizes the UAE government’s estimate that the green energy transition could attract significant investments, boost exports, and create new jobs.
