UAE pledges $100 million to global alliance against hunger and poverty at G20 Summit
The alliance aims to support 500 million low-income individuals with cash transfers and provide quality school meals to 150 million children by 2030.
His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, represented the UAE at the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. During the summit, he announced a significant $100 million pledge from the UAE Aid Agency to support the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.
Sheikh Khaled delivered the UAE’s address, extending Sheikh Mohamed’s greetings to world leaders and expressing gratitude to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the invitation. He commended Brazil’s leadership in hosting the summit and applauded the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a key initiative aimed at shaping sustainable global solutions.
The G20 summit launched the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which has 148 founding members, including 82 nations, the African Union, the European Union, international organizations, financial institutions, and NGOs.
Brazilian President Lula highlighted the urgency of addressing hunger, noting that 733 million people worldwide remain undernourished despite the production of nearly six billion tons of food annually. He called hunger and poverty “the ultimate symbols of our collective tragedy,” urging bold action to ensure no one is left behind.
The 19th G20 Summit, held under the theme ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,’ addressed pressing global issues, including climate change, clean energy transitions, hunger eradication, and sustainable development.
