The UAE has unveiled plans for the world’s first large-scale “round-the-clock” solar and battery storage project, signaling a major milestone in its clean energy transition. Announced during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the gigascale facility is set to deliver baseload renewable energy 24/7, redefining sustainable power solutions.

The initiative, a collaboration between Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), will be located in Abu Dhabi. It features an ambitious 5.2GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), ensuring uninterrupted renewable power supply around the clock.

This innovative combination addresses the intermittency challenges often associated with renewable energy sources. The project is designed to deliver up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload power daily, generated entirely from renewable energy. The 19GWh battery storage facility will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless integration of solar power into the grid, enhancing stability and operational efficiency.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the launch alongside Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, and Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment and Managing Director and Group CEO of ADQ.

“For decades, the biggest barrier facing renewable energy has been intermittency — to be able to source uninterrupted clean power day and night,” said Dr. Al Jaber. “This has been the moonshot challenge of our time, and now, with this groundbreaking project, we have found the solution.”

“By advancing energy infrastructure, we are leading the way in developing cost-effective, scalable renewable energy, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s position as a key player in shaping the future of global energy,” said Alsuwaidi.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi underscored the project’s economic impact, noting it will generate over 10,000 new jobs. Meanwhile, EWEC CEO Othman Al Ali highlighted its significance for critical industries, such as AI and advanced technologies, by ensuring sustainable and reliable power supply.
