Dubai Airports has expanded its autism-inclusive training program, equipping 45,000 employees—including partners and stakeholders across the airport community—to better support autistic and sensory-sensitive travelers at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC).

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s goal of becoming a Certified Autism Destination. DXB is notably the first international airport to receive the Certified Autism Centre (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and is also certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC).

The training expansion is part of a broader strategy to ensure an inclusive, supportive airport experience for travelers with specific needs. “True inclusion starts with people,” said Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports. “By investing and increasing specialist training by 36% year-on-year, we are embedding a culture of understanding and proactive support across our airports.”

He added, “DXB and DWC are more than airports – they are Dubai’s gateway to the world, shaping the first and last impressions of the city for millions of residents and visitors. With this comes a responsibility: to ensure that every guest, regardless of their individual needs, feels supported and included.”

The IBCCES-accredited training covers sensory awareness, effective communication, and techniques to reduce anxiety. It has been adopted by key partners, including Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Emirates, flydubai, Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Taxi Company, and others.

Trained Guest Experience Ambassadors—easily identified by Sunflower pins—are stationed across DXB and DWC to provide dedicated support to autistic travelers and their families.

During Autism Acceptance Month, DXB’s Smart Gates—operated by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs—are illuminated in blue to show solidarity with the autism community. Sunflower symbols, representing hidden disabilities, are also displayed throughout the terminals.

Supportive services include the DXB Travel Planner, a visual guide to help prepare for the journey, as well as Sunflower Lanyards for discreet identification, complimentary parking, dedicated taxis, wheelchair assistance, and a sensory-friendly Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2—reflecting Dubai Airports’ commitment to inclusive travel.
