As AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday digital tools, big tech is reimagining how users access and interact with information. To enhance the search experience in Africa, Google has launched a new feature called AI Mode for users in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

The feature is designed to handle complex or multi-part questions, providing AI-generated answers alongside traditional web results. Leveraging Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, AI Mode breaks queries into subtopics, searches multiple sources simultaneously, and generates a synthesized summary for users.

AI Mode can be accessed through text, voice, or image input, offering flexibility in how users search. The feature aims to save time and improve relevance by delivering consolidated responses that previously would have required multiple searches.

According to Google, “AI Mode is designed to assist with queries that may previously have required several separate searches. By combining multiple search results into one response, the feature aims to make it easier for users to access relevant information in a single view.”

Importantly, when the AI is unsure of an answer, the system defaults to standard web results, maintaining transparency and reliability.

AI Mode appears as a dedicated tab on the Search results page and within the Google app for Android and iOS. Each AI-generated answer includes clickable links to help users verify or explore the information further.

This rollout reflects Google’s broader commitment to integrating AI into its core services while ensuring users retain access to traditional sources. AI Mode will be introduced gradually across the region, adding a new layer of intelligence to online search in Africa.
