Zendaya just wore an archival Thierry Mugler robot suit on the red carpet—and the outfit feels even more relevant today than it did when it debuted nearly 30 years ago.

The actress donned the armor-esque ensemble on Thursday for the Dune: Part Two premier in London. But the world first became acquainted with the showstopping garment in 1995, when Mugler designed it for his fall collection. He named the suit “Maschinenmensch” after the automaton character in Thea von Harbou’s 1925 novel, Metropolis, a work of fiction set in a dystopian city. Mugler’s design captures his fascination with the intersection of machinery and fashion, alongside his prescient anxieties about how the human form could be impacted by emerging technology.

For Zendaya, embodying those themes certainly makes sense at the premier of a science fiction film that deals with intergalactic politics, futuristic weapons of war, and giant spacecrafts powered by psychedelic drugs. But the Maschinenmensch robot suit also seems like a statement about our times. As Mugler predicted several decades ago, the line between tech and bodily experiences is becoming increasingly blurred: Elon Musk just implanted the first Neuralink brain-chip in a patient; Apple’s Vision Pro headset is poised to change the way we view wearable technology; and AI is becoming more and more interwoven with users’ personal lives.

Whether Zendaya’s design team intended this existential nod or not, they’ve certainly been pulling out all the stops for her Dune: Part Two press tour looks. In Mexico City, she wore a custom garment from London-based designer Torishéju Dumi—an organic, flowing piece that calls to mind the film’s natural landscapes. And at the Paris premier, her Louis Vuitton two-piece dress mimicked the hooded robes that many characters wear in the film, while its glimmering gold hue might have been a nod to the story’s aforementioned psychedelic drug, “spice.”

In an era of red carpet looks that have been called “unimaginative” and “unmemorable,” Zendaya is setting a new bar for her contemporaries. Her camp, over-the-top styling lands just shy of too much—and it’s bringing new attention to an iconic outfit that deserves another day in the sun.
