Fueled by ambitious growth goals, airlines across the Middle East are strategically expanding their fleets, embracing cutting-edge technologies, and prioritizing an enhanced passenger experience. Airbus estimates a staggering 3,120 new passenger and freight aircraft deliveries over the next 20 years, a testament to the region’s unwavering commitment to aviation expansion.

Saudi Arabia is investing in aviation infrastructure to establish itself as a major aviation hub to drive tourism and economic growth.

Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s brand-new flag carrier, is scheduled for its maiden flight in mid-2025. With the ambition to connect the kingdom to over 100 destinations by 2030, Riyadh Air aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This national strategy leverages the country’s strategic location to become a crucial link for trade and travel between Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Osamah Alnuaiser, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Riyadh Air, highlights the airline’s role in achieving these goals. He emphasizes Saudi Arabia’s vast potential to become a leading tourist destination, with Riyadh at its heart. Riyadh Air aims to be fully equipped to handle the anticipated surge in tourism upon its launch.

He says, “Saudi Arabia has the potential to become the world’s leading tourism destination, and Riyadh will be at the heart of that. That’s why it needs an airline suitably equipped to handle the increased footfall we predict once we take to the skies in 2025.”

RESURGENT DEMAND FOR AIR TRAVEL

“As Saudi Arabia welcomes the world, we anticipate a notable increase in interest in the years ahead, a trend that is already evident,” adds Alnuaiser. “With ongoing projects across the kingdom, the demand for air travel is expected to soar even further.”

At the moment, the Riyadh-Dubai route is already one of the busiest in the world, so more flights to destinations like this in the region and further afield are certainly required. Interestingly, he observes a trend of airports evolving into destinations, offering more than just departure and arrival services. “When operating on the scale of Riyadh Air, bringing millions more people to and from Saudi Arabia, there has to be a place for them to go when waiting for their flight. So why not make the airport an enjoyable part of the process?”

He envisions airports as enjoyable experiences, offering shopping, dining, relaxation, and work facilities. He commends the plans for the new King Salman International Airport, believing it will further enhance the passenger experience.

CHANGING CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR

It’s such an exciting time to launch a new airline in the digital age, says Alnuaiser, as it can implement the latest digital solutions in every aspect of its business. “Our guests get a seamless experience, from booking to landing.”

Sustainability is another key focus. The airline’s modern fleet, including the fuel-efficient Boeing Dreamliner 787, boasts a 20-30% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 60% noise reduction. However, Alnuaiser clarifies that their primary focus is exceptional service throughout the journey, from booking to check-in, complemented by traditional Saudi Arabian hospitality.

Riyadh’s location allows the airline to connect travelers from almost anywhere to Saudi Arabia. The airline is projected to contribute $20 billion to non-oil GDP growth, foster knowledge transfer, and create an estimated 200,000 jobs. It aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy’s goal of making Saudi Arabia a top global logistics hub by 2030. The Saudi Aviation Strategy aims to serve 330 million air passengers by 2030 through increased connectivity to 250 destinations and a doubled air cargo capacity.

WHEN THE FLIGHT TAKES OFF

With significant partnerships with industry leaders like Microsoft, IBM, and Adobe, Riyadh Air has taken significant strides in its first year. As it takes flight in 2025, the airline aspires to showcase Saudi Arabia’s captivating cultural and natural treasures. Riyadh Air’s ambitious plans position it as a potential catalyst for Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a key player in tourism and aviation, signaling a promising future.
