Prof. Osman Bakr is known for changing the field of materials science. He leads work on advanced hybrid semiconductors and turns new research into technologies that improve imaging and renewable energy. His work helps overcome the cost and physical limitations of traditional silicon electronics, enabling the development of high-performance sensors and solar cells for the future.
While at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Prof. Bakr developed new methods for producing perovskite and quantum dot semiconductors. He founded Quantum Solutions to bring his research to market. The company now makes advanced imaging systems that operate beyond visible light, including short-wave infrared, at a much lower cost than older technologies. Many industries use these systems for tasks such as monitoring energy infrastructure and helping first responders see more clearly in emergencies.
