In a major step toward sustainable development and economic diversification, Abu Dhabi has approved a significant expansion of permitted economic activities on farms. The move supports the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, which aims to position the country among the world’s most food-secure nations by mid-century. By transforming rural farms into multifunctional hubs for agriculture, tourism, and industry, the emirate seeks to unlock new revenue streams, attract investment, and strengthen resilience in its food supply chain.

The decision, announced by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, increases the number of permissible farm-based economic activities to 145. This expansion enables farms across the emirate to pursue new ventures that enhance food production, boost rural tourism, and support overall economic sustainability.

“This expansion allows farm owners and licensed establishments in Abu Dhabi to diversify their operations, making agriculture a more viable and profitable endeavor,” the announcement stated.

Under Decision No. (5) of 2025, the activities are organized into six key categories, ranging from plant production and food support services to recreational offerings such as farm tours and educational workshops.

“By enabling farms to engage in a wider range of activities, the emirate aims to increase local production of food items, reducing reliance on imports and ensuring a more resilient food supply chain,” officials noted. “By allowing farms to offer recreational activities such as farm tours and educational workshops, Abu Dhabi seeks to attract tourists to its rural areas,” the statement added.

The initiative is expected to boost local job creation, promote sustainable practices, and position Abu Dhabi as a leader in agri-tourism and eco-friendly farming.
