Abu Dhabi targets significant emissions cuts with enhanced climate strategy
In an attempt to supercharge the UAE's climate agenda, Abu Dhabi launches the MENA region's first enhanced transparency framework.
In 2023, the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) introduced a nationwide Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) aligned with the Paris Agreement to advance global sustainability goals. Building on this initiative, Abu Dhabi launched its subnational framework a year later, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has enhanced the UAE’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) with a subnational initiative aligned with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy launched in 2023. Leveraging advanced technology, Abu Dhabi’s ETF seamlessly integrates with the national system, providing robust support for climate strategies. The platform, designed for minimal human intervention, collects external data to drive effective climate action.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, emphasized the strategy’s ambitious goals, stating, “The Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy aims to reduce Abu Dhabi’s absolute emissions by 47 million tonnes of GHGs by 2030 from 2016 levels and cut emissions by 22% by 2027.”
