AD Ports Group has published a new report titled Coral Relocation in the Arabian Gulf: Benefits, Risks and Best-Practice Recommendations for Practitioners and Decision-Makers, following a three-year conservation project in collaboration with New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).

The report draws from global coral relocation case studies and adapts best practices to the Arabian Gulf’s unique marine conditions. As coral reefs are among the UAE’s most biologically diverse ecosystems—supporting over 300 species of reef-associated marine life—the study emphasizes their ecological, economic, and scientific value.

However, increasing environmental stressors, particularly marine heatwaves linked to climate change, are accelerating reef degradation. “The most recent bleaching events have been among the most severe on record, and the amount of live coral on reefs has declined by over three-quarters in particularly badly affected areas as a result of mass coral mortality,” the report states.

The publication offers a detailed framework for planning, executing, and monitoring coral relocation efforts to support sustainable coastal development. It acknowledges the challenges of relocation, noting that most global projects have been small in scale—averaging 100 m²—while the cost of transplanting coral can reach $400,000 per hectare. Success rates also remain low due to the complexities of establishing new, functional ecosystems.

The report outlines key recommendations across different phases of relocation. Planning includes goal setting, baseline assessments, and piloting. Operational steps cover species selection, stress management, seasonal timing, transportation, site preparation, and coral attachment techniques.

Eiman Al Khalaqi, Senior Vice President of Innovation at AD Ports Group, said the report reinforces the UAE’s long-term sustainability agenda.

“This report is a testament to our dedication to integrating sustainable practices into coastal development. We are committed to safeguarding these vital ecosystems and leaving a positive impact on our environment for future generations.”
