Abu Dhabi is rolling out an extensive mobility plan for the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, running from December 4 to 7. The initiative features AI-powered drones, autonomous vehicles, and a fleet of 3,000 taxis to manage traffic and facilitate movement across Yas Island.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) stated that the plan is designed to ensure smooth transport operations during one of Abu Dhabi’s largest annual events and to reinforce the emirate’s reputation for hosting major global gatherings. Traffic will be managed through the Traffic Management Centre, which will monitor signals and provide real-time updates. Road Service Patrols and tow trucks will support motorists and keep traffic moving.

AI-powered drones will monitor congestion, detect illegal stopping, and record violations, with data sent directly to the control center. Digital systems will track taxi parking and availability, ensuring all monitoring complies with regulatory and privacy standards.

As part of Abu Dhabi’s smart mobility strategy, ITC will operate 15 autonomous vehicles during the event. These vehicles will run on designated routes across Yas Island between 3 pm and 10 pm, transporting spectators between key access points. The fleet will be supervised through ITC’s new smart mobility platform.

Visitors can also access a wider network of more than 30 autonomous vehicles connecting Yas Island to Al Saadiyat Island, Zayed International Airport, Al Reem Island, and Al Maryah Island through the TXAI and Uber apps.

ITC has assigned 82 public buses to support the event, including a Yas circular service linking Yas Mall, Warner Bros. car parks, race circuit gates, hotels, and entertainment areas. Around 3,000 taxis, including regular cabs and services such as Uber and Careem, will operate throughout the four-day period.

Two dedicated pick-up and drop-off areas have been established within the race zone, with additional sites located near hotels and firework viewing areas. A special tariff will be applied, and ITC will oversee taxi operations before, during, and after the race.

Supervisors and inspectors from ITC and partner agencies will be stationed across Yas Island to guide visitors, manage parking and public transport, and oversee busy areas in coordination with Formula 1 organizers and Abu Dhabi Police.

ITC, a long-standing partner of the Grand Prix, said its experienced Emirati task force leads these operations. The center added that it supports major events across the emirate as part of its mandate to provide an integrated, safe, and efficient transport system.
