Central to Dubai’s green transition is the role of electric vehicles (EVs), which have become a key component of Dubai’s efforts to build a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is making steady progress toward EV adoption in the emirate. The grid controller has expanded burgeoning Dubai’s network of green charger points by adding over 740 charging stations across the emirates for residents to use around the clock.

The initiative aligns with DEWA’s commitment to promote green practices in Dubai’s booming private sector to collectively advance the UAE’s ambitious zero emissions goals by 2050. Since 2014, nearly 17,000 Dubai residents have benefitted from DEWA’s green initiatives. The introduction of an additional 740 Green Charger points in Dubai aids in the advancement of the metropolis’s sustainable infrastructure, which has significantly diversified in recent years.

DEWA’s EV Green Charger network will consist of ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box chargers for residents to use. In October 2024, Tesla and UAEV were granted the first two Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licenses for EV charging stations in Dubai by DEWA.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, believes rapid and efficient EV adoption across Dubai lends to the emirate’s proactive participation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The recent launch of the Regulatory and Licensing Framework for the development and operation of EV charging infrastructure in Dubai serves as another example of Dubai’s commitment to creating “the smartest and happiest city in the world,” said Al Tayer.

Residents can locate DEWA-licensed charging points via DEWA’s website, smart app, and 14 other digital platforms. The ease of use, coupled with DEWA’s expansive charging network, has led to almost 35,000 residents and private sector entities opting for EVs as of October 2024.

By 2050, the UAE envisions 50% EV adoption, an ongoing goal that leverages disruptive technologies and innovations in the green mobility sector. Dubai, along with other UAE authorities, aims to amplify DEWA’s current 31,674-megawatt hours of electricity to power electric vehicles for a greener, emission-free future.
