DEWA enhances energy efficiency by 43% since 2006
This achievement cut 104 million tons of CO2—equivalent to planting 527 million trees.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has improved electricity and water production efficiency by 43.61% since 2006, marking a significant milestone in sustainability and operations.
According to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, this progress has led to a cumulative reduction of 104 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over 18 years—equivalent to planting 527 million trees. Al Tayer also emphasized that these advancements have generated substantial financial savings for the authority.
Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation (Power & Water) at DEWA, credited the success to innovation and technological advancements.
“We place great emphasis on enhancing the efficiency of electricity and water production through innovation and continuous upgrades to our production plants, as well as the deployment of cutting-edge technologies,” Lootah explained. “DEWA regularly develops operation and maintenance modes to enhance efficiency further.”
DEWA employs co-generation technology, using heat recovery steam generators to capture waste heat from gas turbines, generating additional electricity and supporting water desalination.
The authority also utilizes a hybrid desalination system that combines multi-stage flashing with seawater reverse osmosis, enhancing efficiency while controlling costs.
Additionally, DEWA collaborates with original equipment manufacturers to upgrade gas turbines, boosting efficiency, reliability, and overall performance.
