DEWA’s green hydrogen initiative marks major milestone in clean energy
The initiative is the first in the MENA region to produce green hydrogen using solar power.

As global momentum builds toward net-zero targets, the UAE continues to lead in clean energy innovation. One of the country’s flagship sustainability initiatives, the Green Hydrogen project by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has reached a major production milestone, reinforcing the UAE’s strategic vision for a carbon-neutral future.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, announced that the project has produced more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since its launch in May 2021. A significant portion of this hydrogen was used to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, reducing more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Over 11 tonnes were supplied to the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), helping to power hydrogen-fueled vehicles at ENOC’s Service Station of the Future during Expo 2020 Dubai and supporting various industrial applications.
“The Green Hydrogen project supports the forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate the competitive advantages of the UAE in the field of hydrogen,” said Al Tayer. “It enhances DEWA’s efforts to support the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050… It also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030.”
The initiative is the first in the MENA region to produce green hydrogen using solar power. Developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the facility generates approximately 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour and includes storage capacity for 12 hours of production. This stored hydrogen powers a 300-kilowatt gas engine and can be adapted for future use across the energy, transport, and industrial sectors.
