DP World and Masdar join forces to explore renewables for port operations
The collaboration will target optimal sites for renewables in Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Egypt.
Activities in ports — from cargo handling to transportation — are carbon-intensive, resulting in significant environmental challenges. Shipping alone contributes nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
With the growing demand for global freight, maritime trade volumes are set to triple by 2050, and the environmental costs that come with it can no longer be ignored.
Now, DP World and Masdar, who have been reducing emissions and championing cleaner and more sustainable practices, are partnering to explore solar and energy storage solutions across DP World’s port operations in the Middle East and Africa.Â
This three-year collaboration aims to identify suitable locations for implementing renewable energy systems, initially focusing on Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Egypt.
“By exploring renewable energy solutions, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and drive positive change in the supply chain industry,” said DP World’s Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.
This partnership aligns with DP World’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050, supporting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Race to Zero initiative and the UAE’s ambitious 2050 net-zero goal.
Beyond immediate project development, DP World plans to leverage its global presence to advocate for stronger climate action. Collaborating with the COP28 Presidency, the company aims to utilize its extensive network across 75 countries to develop impactful long-term solutions that contribute to the global fight against climate change.
The Innovation By Design Summit is in Doha on April 24. Attendance at the summit is by invitation only. Delegates can register here to receive their exclusive invite.
