As global trade dynamics shift and emerging markets in Africa gain increasing attention, international companies are forming strategic alliances to tap into the continent’s vast economic potential. In this context, DP World and Itochu Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting logistics, supply chain infrastructure, and distribution capabilities across sub-Saharan Africa.

The agreement was signed during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, by Beat Simon, Group Chief Operating Officer, Logistics at DP World, and senior executives from Itochu Corporation.

Under the MoU, both companies will explore joint opportunities to enhance connectivity and market access throughout Africa, supporting Japanese companies looking to enter or expand their presence across the continent.

Initial areas of collaboration include fleet and logistics operations, supply chain optimization, and the distribution of essential commodities and food products.

DP World has a strong presence across 48 African countries, supported by a broad network of ports, terminals, warehouses, and trucking fleets. The company has already invested over $3 billion in infrastructure projects in Africa, with another $3 billion planned over the next three to five years.

Headquartered in Tokyo, Itochu brings decades of experience across multiple sectors including machinery, textiles, energy, chemicals, and consumer goods. Its extensive experience and diversified portfolio position it well to assist Japanese firms expanding into African markets.

“Africa represents one of the most dynamic growth frontiers for global trade,” said Beat Simon. “This collaboration reflects a shared vision to unlock value by combining our infrastructure and logistics expertise with Itochu’s commercial experience to create deeper connections between Africa and Japan.”

Shinya Ishizuka, CEO of Africa Bloc at Itochu, added, “We hope that this collaboration will not only lead to further projects between the two parties, but also serve as a bridge between Japanese companies seeking to expand into Africa and the African market.”
