DP World to pilot MagRail technology to transform port logistics in India
This logistics innovation is designed to increase cargo throughput, reduce costs, and cut CO₂ emissions.

As India steps up efforts to modernize its logistics sector under the National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti initiative, a landmark collaboration is set to introduce next-generation freight mobility to Indian ports. DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and European transport technology innovator Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a pilot project featuring MagRail, an advanced rail system that enables autonomous, electric-powered cargo movement.
DP World is spearheading this initiative to transform port logistics. The Deendayal Port Authority, a major multi-cargo hub under the Government of India, will host the pilot at its Kandla terminal in Gujarat, where the feasibility of deploying MagRail technology will be evaluated in a live port environment.
“This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure, enhancing capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands. DP World, as a trusted partner, plays a crucial role in enabling this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to strengthening India’s logistics framework and ensuring seamless trade facilitation,” said Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).
The MoU outlines the development of a 750-meter MagRail test track to demonstrate autonomous cargo movement on existing rail lines using linear motor technology. This innovation is expected to boost cargo throughput, lower operational costs, and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.
“At DP World, we are committed to future-proofing our terminals by adopting innovative technologies… Piloting solutions like MagRail aligns with our focus on enhancing speed, efficiency, and sustainability in logistics,” said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & CEO, DP World. Nevomo CEO Przemek (Ben) Paczek added, “We are proud to partner in this innovative initiative… This is a significant step towards advancing sustainable logistics in India.”
