This year’s World Governments Summit has sparked actionable innovation, bringing together delegates worldwide to unite under the shared goal of ‘Shaping Future Governments.’ In line with this global vision, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company to explore the development of the “Dubai Loop” transportation project. The collaboration was announced on Thursday during the World Governments Summit in Dubai.

The Dubai Loop will be a 17 km-long underground transport system featuring 11 stations, designed to carry over 20,000 passengers per hour. Similar to the Las Vegas Loop, it will operate below the ground with driverless vehicles, offering a fast and efficient mode of transportation.

According to The Boring Company, the system will provide direct travel to the destination station without intermediate stops. The loop will travel up to 160 km per hour and be powered by electric vehicles.

Elon Musk confirmed the partnership plans with Dubai to develop the project during his appearance via video link at the World Governments Summit. He stated that the project would allow people to travel as if moving through a “wormhole” in Dubai, referring to the ability to instantly travel between two points without encountering long distances or traffic delays.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, who hosted the conversation with Musk, commented, “The Loop project is going to cover Dubai’s most densely populated areas for people to go from point to point in a seamless manner. We hope to change people’s lives.”

During his discussion with Al Olama, Musk also addressed the importance of improving government efficiency, noting that reducing bureaucracy and advancing technology within government institutions were key challenges. Musk further highlighted the benefits of tunnel systems over alternatives like flying cars, emphasizing their practicality, safety, and efficiency.

Musk added that the proposed transportation system will link key hubs throughout Dubai, drastically reducing travel times between major points in the emirate to minutes.
