Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reached a major milestone in its Green Hydrogen project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. Launched in May 2021, the initiative has generated approximately 90 tons of green hydrogen, cutting nearly 450 tons of CO2 emissions.

The Green Hydrogen project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, harnesses solar energy to produce green hydrogen.

In collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the project generates 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, storing it for up to 12 hours. This stored hydrogen is then used to generate electricity at night through a hydrogen gas motor.

Strategically situated at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park—the world’s largest single-site solar park, with a planned capacity exceeding 5,000 MW by 2030—the project aligns with the UAE’s ambitions to drive competitive green hydrogen production costs and reinforce its position as a global leader in clean energy.

The initiative is also focused on exploring the future applications of hydrogen in various sectors, including air, land, and sea transport, as well as other industries.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the project’s alignment with the UAE’s ambitions. “We support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to enhance the UAE’s pioneering and competitive position worldwide in low-carbon hydrogen.”

Located at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park with a planned capacity of over 5,000 MW by 2030, the project is designed to drive cost-effective green hydrogen production.

Powered by electrolysis using renewable energy, it takes advantage of Dubai’s record-low solar energy prices, further cementing the emirate’s position as a global leader in sustainable energy innovation.
