EAD becomes first UAE regulator to earn second carbon neutrality certification
This milestone makes EAD the first regulatory body in the UAE to achieve the certification twice for offsetting carbon emissions from 2020–2022.

As global climate concerns intensify, organizations around the world are increasing efforts to reduce their carbon footprints and adopt more sustainable practices. In the UAE, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) is leading by example, having received its second Carbon Neutrality Certification from Applus+, a UNFCCC-accredited verification agency.
This milestone makes EAD the first regulatory body in the UAE to achieve the certification twice, highlighting its long-term commitment to climate action and environmental stewardship in the region.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: “Receiving the Carbon Neutrality Certificate for the second time underscores EAD’s deep commitment to building a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi. By offsetting our carbon emissions for the 2020–2022 period, we are not only setting a benchmark for government entities but also inspiring our peers in government and challenging the private sector to embed sustainable practices into their core operations. We believe this milestone will accelerate our collective journey towards net-zero emissions, solidifying Abu Dhabi’s role as a regional leader in environmental stewardship.”
EAD’s emissions were assessed by GE3S and verified by Applus+. The agency addressed emissions from building energy use, chilled water systems, waste generation, and fuel consumption by vehicles and generators, while implementing reduction strategies across its operations.
To advance its sustainability goals, EAD is transitioning to a hybrid vehicle fleet, retrofitting facilities with LED lighting and smart water systems, and using energy-efficient air conditioning. Solar panels are installed in new projects, supported by designs that follow LEED Zero Carbon standards.
