GEMS Education has launched a major renewable energy initiative, partnering with Positive Zero to install solar power systems across 23 schools in Dubai. This marks the largest solar energy project in the UAE’s education sector to date.

Under the agreement, Positive Zero will design, install, and maintain solar systems, including rooftop, carport, and bus parking installations, with a total capacity of nearly 12.7 MWp. The project is expected to generate 21.25 GWh of electricity annually—enough to power 2,000 homes.

This initiative supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and is set to significantly impact GEMS Education’s carbon footprint. The project is expected to cut 14,276 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually—equivalent to taking 3,300 cars off the road or planting nearly six million trees.

Positive Zero will finance the project through long-term leasing, allowing GEMS Education to adopt solar energy without upfront investment. David Auriau, CEO of Positive Zero, commended GEMS Education for its leadership in sustainability.

“This landmark agreement with Positive Zero not only underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint but also aligns with our vision of integrating renewable energy at scale,” said Dino Varkey, Group CEO of GEMS Education.

The project is a cornerstone of GEMS Education’s broader ESG and sustainability strategy, integrating climate literacy into its curriculum. The school operator is training United Nations Climate Change Teachers, hosting student-led COP-style events, and offering sustainability-focused academic programs to instill environmental awareness among students.

The solar installations at the 23 schools are set for completion by early 2026, reinforcing GEMS Education’s commitment to leading sustainability efforts in the UAE’s education sector.
