Qatar is putting the pedal to the metal in its pursuit of sustainable transportation, taking concrete steps to advance the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs and HEVs) nationwide in a strategic coordination meeting hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), the country’s national green mobility task force convened with top automotive dealers and distributors to align efforts and address barriers to sustainable transport.

The meeting supports Qatar’s broader sustainability goals under the Qatar National Vision 2030. Representatives from various government ministries, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), and industry stakeholders came together to share insights and develop collaborative strategies to support the transition to eco-friendly transportation.

Key challenges discussed included the limited availability of public charging infrastructure and concerns about long-distance travel. Participants emphasized the need to expand the charging network, particularly along intercity routes, and to introduce incentives that encourage consumers to adopt green vehicles.

A key highlight of the meeting was the review of current EV and HEV sales performance in Qatar, compared with select regional markets. Attendees also assessed the progress of a partnership between Kahramaa and national fuel provider WOQOD, aimed at significantly increasing the number of EV charging stations at existing fuel stations to make green driving more accessible and convenient.

The task force outlined steps to simplify the installation of EV chargers through a dedicated Kahramaa platform and stressed the need for streamlined inter-agency procedures. Stakeholders agreed on the importance of developing a national charging station database and making this information publicly available through digital platforms to improve user experience and build consumer confidence.

Public awareness was another focal point, with participants calling for coordinated campaigns to educate residents on the environmental and economic benefits of switching to electric or hybrid vehicles. These efforts were essential to encouraging wider adoption and supporting Qatar’s shift toward a low-emissions transportation system.

By bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and infrastructure providers, Qatar is signaling its commitment to move beyond pilot projects and advance toward large-scale transformation, laying the foundation for a greener, smarter mobility future.
