Sustainability is becoming a key factor for many travelers, and hotels are no exception. Recent data showed that 66% of tourists are willing to pay extra for more sustainable offerings.
Dubai has introduced a stamp of approval for hotels implementing the best sustainable practices.
Launched by the Department of Economy and Tourism, the initiative will recognize hotels that meet DET’s 19 sustainability requirements.
Criteria include energy and water efficiency, waste management programs, and staff education and engagement initiatives.
Based on global best practices, a committee of senior industry professionals will oversee the accreditation process. Gold, silver, and bronze awards will be available.
“The Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp champions sustainable practices while setting a benchmark for excellence in environmental stewardship, aligned with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda 2033,” said Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance sector, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).
The DET wants to encourage others to “follow suit and embrace sustainable initiatives that not only benefit their businesses but also contribute to the collective well-being of our city and the world at large,” Lootah said.
He added, “By supporting businesses and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices and reducing their carbon footprint, we are not only safeguarding the environment but also promoting sustainable growth.”
Aligned with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability vision, it aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a leading sustainable tourism destination and support the UAE’s NetZero 2050 initiative.
Nominations for hotel establishments to obtain the stamp will begin on 3rd of August, and end on 31st of August.
