In line with its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, the UAE is strengthening its waste management framework through a new pilot project under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative. This initiative supports the UAE Integrated Waste Management Agenda 2023–2026 and reflects the country’s broader shift toward a circular economy.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tadweer Group to implement the project, which focuses on the responsible management of waste from electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, and packaging. The pilot will be conducted in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Tadweer Group serving as the Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).

The MoU was signed in Dubai in the presence of Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Engineer Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group.

Dr. Al Dahak emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve sustainability goals. “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Tadweer Group to support our goals for integrated management and safe disposal of waste. The EPR initiative constitutes a key pillar of this framework, engaging all stakeholders, in line with international best practices.”

Engineer Al Dhaheri noted, “Tadweer Group is proud to work closely with the Ministry on this important initiative. By piloting an EPR model, we are laying the foundation for a more accountable and resource-efficient waste management system.”

The MoU also outlines strategies to enhance regulatory readiness, engage producers and suppliers, and document lessons learned during the pilot phase. At the signing event, 26 companies from various sectors signed the EPR Pledge, highlighting a strong private sector commitment to sustainable waste practices in the UAE.
