The UAE actively seeks to increase private sector involvement in its expanding space industry. Investment in the country’s space sector exceeded $6 billion in 2023, covering various areas, including satellite communications, Earth and space exploration, data transmission services, satellite broadcasting, and mobile satellite communications.

The Middle East is on the brink of a significant milestone with the launch of Orbitworks, the region’s first private space infrastructure company. A joint venture between Marlan Space and US-based Loft Orbital, Orbitworks plans to produce 50 satellites annually weighing 500 kg. Backed by Abu Dhabi-listed International Holding Company, this $100 million venture will mark the UAE’s debut in developing commercial low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Orbitworks will soon start building a facility to integrate and test satellites, utilizing advanced hardware, software, and industrial technologies. The joint venture has procured components for its first 10 satellites, with plans to launch them by the first quarter of 2026. The initial satellite platform will be assembled, integrated, and tested by early 2025.
