Oman has embraced sustainability as a cornerstone of its national development strategy, reflecting its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. The country’s Vision 2040 outlines a roadmap to diversify its economy while reducing dependency on oil and fostering green energy initiatives.

Recently, Oman unveiled plans to establish a “Net Zero Centre,” a key initiative to steer the nation toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This bold move highlights Oman’s dedication to advancing its carbon neutrality strategy while aligning with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities.

The Net Zero Centre will focus on updating and implementing strategies to support energy efficiency projects and provide technical assistance to government entities and private enterprises. Speaking about the initiative, Minister of Energy and Minerals Salim Nasser Al Aufi highlighted the centre’s pivotal role in supervising net-zero plans and accelerating initiatives across all sectors.

A cornerstone of the centre’s mandate is the adoption and transfer of cutting-edge international practices and technologies. It will also promote scientific research, innovation, and the development of national expertise to position Oman as a leader in sustainable development and climate action.

The centre’s responsibilities will include critical carbon management functions, including certifying carbon, hydrogen, and low-carbon products. It will also process applications and issue certificates in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Environment Authority. Additionally, the centre will regulate the registration and approval of carbon credit trading requests, ensuring adherence to international carbon market frameworks.

By streamlining carbon trading and certification processes, Oman aims to incentivize sustainable practices and attract investments that align with its carbon-neutral goals. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the Sultanate’s sustainability journey, showcasing its proactive stance on climate change while fostering economic growth.

Establishing the Net Zero Centre reflects Oman’s commitment to embedding ESG principles into its national policies, paving the way for a greener, more resilient future.
