A Swedish delegation is visiting Qatar during Web Summit Qatar 2025 to explore opportunities for technology and sustainability collaboration. The visit focuses on innovation, knowledge exchange, and strengthening ties between the two countries.

Swedish Ambassador to Qatar, H E Gautam Bhattacharyya, told The Peninsula that the timing of the visit is “perfect,” highlighting the maturation of the Qatar-Sweden relationship following high-profile visits by both heads of state. “While we’ve had delegations and contacts before, now things are becoming more concrete,” said Ambassador Bhattacharyya.

He highlighted the synergy between the two countries, with Sweden contributing expertise in technology and innovation while Qatar offers resources and infrastructure. The delegation, which included representatives from Swedish Incubators and Science Parks (SISP), Scania VC, several startups, and Ideon Science Park, met with key Qatari stakeholders such as Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI), Qatar Science and Technology Park, and university leaders.

The visit builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between SISP and the QRDI Council during the  Amir’s 2024 visit to Sweden, aimed at strengthening startup collaboration and incubation.

As part of the trip, the delegation took part in the Corporate Innovation Summit and Web Summit Qatar 2025, gaining insight into the region’s growing startup ecosystem. QRDI Council and Ignite Sweden also co-hosted a session titled Qatar & Sweden: Powering Deep Tech Innovation.

Sasan Shaba, VP of Philanthropy and International Collaboration at SISP, described Qatar as a “gateway to the region,” similar to Sweden’s role in Europe. He highlighted opportunities for collaboration in climate tech, sustainability, AI, and medtech.

The delegation is focused on establishing tangible commercial partnerships, with Ignite Sweden facilitating matchmaking between Qatari corporations and Swedish startups for investment, pilot projects, joint ventures, and R&D collaborations.

A notable example is the MoU between Swedish firm Graphmatech and Qatar-based AiSciA Informatics, which aims to accelerate sustainable materials innovation by combining graphene expertise with AI-powered materials discovery.

Scania is also exploring innovation opportunities in Qatar, emphasizing the potential for a comprehensive ecosystem that integrates academia, startups, corporations, and government agencies to enhance global market access.
