As part of its push to diversify the economy and boost global tourism, Qatar has announced plans for a major new coastal destination connecting the West Bay area with Al Safliya Island.

Envisioned as a leading leisure hub, the project aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to strengthen public-private partnerships, attract international investment, and expand sustainable tourism infrastructure.

Qatar Tourism, in partnership with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), and Invest Qatar, has opened the Expression of Interest (EOI) phase for the West Bay Waterfront and Al Safliya Island project. The announcement was made on May 22 during the Qatar Economic Forum, with senior representatives from all involved entities in attendance.

A formal agreement was signed at the event to strengthen collaboration on the project. Signatories included Omar Al Jaber, Head of the Tourism Development Sector at Qatar Tourism; Saleh bin Majid Al-Khulaifi, Assistant Undersecretary for Industrial Affairs and Business Development at MoCI; and Eng. Mohammed Masoud Al-Mari, Senior Projects Engineering Advisor at Ashghal.

The development will encompass the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of five beachfront plots, bringing together hospitality, dining, and entertainment offerings to create a cohesive waterfront destination.

H.E. Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism, said: “The West Bay Waterfront and Al Safliya Island project is a strategic initiative that underscores our commitment to expanding Qatar’s tourism offering.” H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, Minister of Commerce and Industry, noted: “Such projects serve as a key catalyst for… sustainable development and achieve the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.”

H.E. Eng. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Meer of Ashghal called the project “a distinguished model of constructive cooperation,” encouraging local firms to get involved. Sheikh Ali Alwaleed Al-Thani, CEO of Invest Qatar, added: “This project will attract significant investment and elevate Qatar’s tourism infrastructure.”
