Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for Phase I of the Dubai Walk Master Plan in Al Ras, marking a step forward in the emirate’s push toward a more walkable and connected urban landscape.
The first phase will see the development of the Historic Al Ras Walkway, featuring 12 km of pedestrian pathways and 5 km of cycling tracks. The project also includes the rehabilitation of 10 artistic spaces, delivered in collaboration with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and supported by Emirati and local artists.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, said the initiative is central to strengthening Dubai’s global competitiveness in walkway infrastructure and advancing soft mobility. He added that it supports the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, particularly the “20-minute city” concept, which aims to ensure residents can access over 80% of essential services within a short commute.
The plan also aligns with Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033, focusing on improving community wellbeing by enhancing pedestrian safety, boosting connectivity between districts, and integrating cultural and aesthetic elements into infrastructure.
Al Tayer noted that the initiative will reinforce collaboration with strategic partners while empowering youth to contribute innovative ideas for walkway design and amenities, reflecting future mobility trends.
Looking ahead, the Dubai Walk Pedestrian Master Plan outlines a comprehensive framework to develop an integrated and accessible network across 160 areas. It includes plans to deliver and upgrade 6,000 km of walkways by 2040, alongside the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses.
The long-term goal is to increase the share of walking and soft mobility trips from 16% in 2025 to 25% by 2040, further positioning Dubai as a leading pedestrian-friendly city.
