The Saudi Arabian Olympic committee has announced that it has officially submitted a bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at the megacity NEOM.

If the bid is approved, Saudi Arabia will be the first country to host this mega sporting event in West Asia. Interestingly, the kingdom wants the games to be held in the Trojena project – an ambitious mountain destination offering adventure sports and outdoor skiing. It is expected to be completed by 2026.

The decision to pick up a venue for the 10th Asian Winter Games will be taken during Cambodia’s Olympic Council of Asia meeting later this year.

The Asian Winter Games have been held once every four years since 1983 and have been held in countries like Japan, China, South Korea, and Kazakhstan. Over 32 Asian countries participate in activities like alpine skiing, ice hockey, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating, and more.

“The bid to host the AWG affirms the geographical, environmental diversity, and natural wealth the kingdom enjoys and is willing to share with our wider Asian Olympic family. We are very excited to welcome all Winter Sports enthusiasts in 2029, aiming to celebrate an incomparable experience in Trojena,” said Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

As such, the desert Kingdom isn’t often associated with the Winter Games; hence it would be massive if the county could pull off this feat. Moreover, after the 2022 Football world cup in Qatar, this could be the second major sporting event to be hosted in the region.
