Saudi Arabia has firmly established itself as one of the top ten battery energy storage markets globally. Major projects like the newly launched 2,000 MWh Bisha Project, one of the largest in the Middle East and Africa, are driving this progress.

This achievement aligns with the Kingdom’s ambitious push to integrate renewable energy, with a target of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

As part of the Ministry of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Program, Saudi Arabia aims to reach an impressive 48 GWh storage capacity by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy development.

Currently, 26 GWh of energy storage projects are in various stages of development in Saudi Arabia. These projects are vital for stabilizing the grid, balancing the intermittent nature of solar and wind power, and helping the Kingdom meet its ambitious renewable energy goals.

Energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie highlights Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in the rapidly growing energy storage sector. The firm projects that continued growth will help solidify the Kingdom’s place among the top ten global markets for energy storage in the next decade. This aligns with the goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030, emphasizing the transition to renewable energy.

Saudi Arabia’s energy storage roadmap includes reaching 8 GWh of operational storage by 2025 and 22 GWh by 2026. If these goals are met, the Kingdom will become the third-largest energy storage market globally, following China and the United States.

The operational Bisha project, featuring 488 advanced battery containers, boasts a 500 MW capacity with a four-hour duration. It allows for charging during low-demand periods and discharging during peak times, providing crucial backup power and enhancing grid flexibility. This smart approach contributes to a more sustainable energy future.

Saudi Arabia’s energy sector is dramatically transforming, reinforcing its leadership in diverse energy production and export.

By the end of 2024, the total capacity of renewable energy projects across all stages of development reached 44.1 GW. Energy storage is a cornerstone of this transition, improving grid reliability, enhancing emergency response capabilities, and supporting the Kingdom’s broader strategy for advancing its energy sector.
