The Fashion Commission has released a research paper titled Recycling Ihram Clothing: Environmental Sustainability in Hajj and Umrah, highlighting the Sustainable Ihram Initiative launched in February 2025.

The initiative marks Saudi Arabia’s first major step into recycled fashion, merging the sacred symbolism of pilgrimage attire with the principles of environmental sustainability.

Designed to transform discarded Ihram garments into sustainable clothing for future pilgrims, the initiative reflects the kingdom’s broader commitment to responsible resource management and circular economy practices. It also aims to preserve the spiritual significance of Hajj and Umrah while promoting eco-conscious behavior among pilgrims.

Burak Çakmak, CEO of the Fashion Commission, described the initiative as “a vivid embodiment of the power of cooperation and concerted efforts between local and international partners.”

Mustafa Bukhari, CEO of Tadweem, the Commission’s recycling partner, stressed that the effort “represents an authentic expression that blends the depth of faith with the principles of responsible environmental stewardship.”

The paper delves into the cultural and religious significance of Ihram garments and explores the potential of expanding recycling programs to reduce growing textile waste.

It also discusses strategies to raise awareness among pilgrims, encourage the use of recycled garments, and promote the role of technology in enhancing recycling processes to produce high-quality, sustainable textiles.

By aligning faith-based traditions with modern sustainability goals, the initiative offers a model for integrating cultural heritage and environmental action in ways that could resonate both within the Kingdom and internationally.
