Saudi Arabia modernizes aviation sector with dual-flag carrier strategy
Key components include developing the King Salman International Airport and upgrading arrival lounges nationwide.

Saudi Arabia has launched a comprehensive initiative to transform its aviation sector, featuring major infrastructure upgrades and new development projects, according to Transport and Logistics Minister Saleh Al-Jasser.
In an interview with Al-Ekhbariya, Al-Jasser said the initiative is part of the Kingdom’s broader transport and logistics strategy, led by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
A key element of the plan is the transition from a single national carrier to a dual-flag system, with Riyadh Air and Saudi Arabian Airlines at the core, supported by other operators such as Flyadeal and Flynas.
Key elements of the initiative include the development of King Salman International Airport—set to become the Kingdom’s flagship aviation hub—and upgrades to arrival lounges at airports nationwide. Ongoing projects are also in progress at regional airports in Jazan, Hail, Al-Jouf, and Taif, the minister confirmed.
The strategy aims to strengthen global and domestic connectivity by linking major hubs like King Salman and King Abdulaziz International Airports with destinations across the Kingdom and around the world.
Al-Jasser noted that the reforms have already increased the number of international destinations served by Saudi airports from 100 to 172. He added that the initiative has not only modernized aviation infrastructure but also attracted new investment and accelerated the sector’s broader transformation.
