The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, known as Saudi Reef, has launched its first dedicated sub-program to expand the production, processing, and marketing of Saudi coffee, in cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The initiative sets ambitious targets for the sector, including increasing annual coffee production from 800 tons to 7,000 tons and raising the Kingdom’s self-sufficiency rate from 0.5% to 4.4% by the end of the year.

Officials say these goals aim to strengthen national food security, support rural economies, and advance broader economic diversification efforts under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

Saudi Reef spokesperson Majed Al-Buraikan said the new program is designed to position Saudi coffee as a core cash crop within the country’s agricultural structure, helping to expand and stabilize the production base.

He noted that the initiative also seeks to reduce reliance on imported coffee, promote value-added processing and marketing, and support smallholder farmers by improving income levels and creating employment opportunities for young people in production regions and across the value chain.

Coffee is one of eight agricultural sectors supported by Saudi Reef. The program contributes to food security and crop diversification while enhancing the livelihoods of smallholders, producers, and rural households through targeted development initiatives and technical support.
