Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and the UAE Space Agency (UAE SA) have partnered to create a quantum communication infrastructure to enhance national security and protect critical data from cyber threats. Announced at GITEX Global 2024, this collaboration utilizes UAE-developed Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies to pave the way for unhackable quantum communications.

The initiative unveils a comprehensive quantum-secure network that integrates fiber and space-based systems. Central to this effort is TII’s Abu Dhabi Quantum Optical Ground Station (ADQOGS), one of the largest facilities of its kind in the MENA region and the first in the Arab world. This facility will enhance secure optical communications and link the UAE to a global quantum-secure network. A dedicated fiber link will also be established between ADQOGS and TII’s Quantum Communications facility in Masdar City.

His Excellency Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, said, “At the UAE Space Agency, we recognize the critical importance of developing secure communication technologies and harnessing cutting-edge advancements, such as quantum communications. This technology is pivotal in safeguarding data transfer between satellites and terrestrial command centers.”

“This collaboration strengthens the UAE’s position as a global leader in space research and development, driving the country’s comprehensive development over the next fifty years,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, said, “By integrating both ground-based and satellite QKD solutions, we are not just advancing quantum communications—we are cementing the UAE’s position as one of the few nations globally pioneering a holistic, unhackable quantum communication infrastructure.”
