The UAE is exploring the possibility of building a second nuclear power plant to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity, according to Hamad Alkaabi, the UAE’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the UN’s nuclear agency.

This comes as the final reactor of the UAE’s first nuclear power plant prepares to begin commercial operations later this year. Alkaabi stated that “the government is looking at this option,” but a final decision and details regarding the tender process haven’t been finalized.

While details like budget, size, and location remain undecided, Alkaabi hinted that a tender process could be initiated this year. Earlier reports from Reuters sources in April suggested the UAE planned a four-reactor facility with bids potentially solicited within months.

These sources further indicated the UAE’s goal of awarding the tender and starting construction in 2024 to bring the new plant online by 2032, aligning with projected energy needs. Alkaabi said the final plant design would likely encompass two or four reactors.

With a population of around 10 million, the UAE has embraced nuclear power as a low-carbon energy source to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment. Their first nuclear plant, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, began commercial operations in 2021.

The plant is poised to transform the UAE’s energy landscape. Upon full operation, it aims to deliver a quarter of the nation’s electricity needs.

The plant utilizes nuclear power, a low-carbon energy source, to power homes, businesses, and government facilities. This clean energy approach will significantly reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint. When fully operational, Barakah is estimated to prevent a staggering 22 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
