The UAE’s national oil company, ADNOC, has announced the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled process optimization technology to autonomously monitor the performance of essential equipment, enabling process optimization and preventative maintenance.

This technology will help reduce operational downtime, boost efficiency, and minimize the need for time-consuming manual inspections.

Developed through a collaborative effort by ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Centre, AIQ, and AVEVA, the Neuron 5 system was initially implemented at ADNOC Onshore’s North East Bab (NEB) field and ADNOC Gas’s Taweelah gas compression plant, covering hundreds of critical equipment.

ADNOC now plans to expand Neuron 5’s deployment across all its facilities, including thousands of critical production assets such as compressors, valves, and generators.

Neuron 5 utilizes advanced AI models and deep learning algorithms to predict maintenance needs and monitor equipment performance by analyzing data such as pressure, temperature, and vibration collected from sensors on critical equipment.

The pilot phase of Neuron 5 demonstrated that the technology has the potential to reduce unplanned shutdowns by 50% and extend planned maintenance intervals by 20%. This improvement allows ADNOC operators to focus on more productive activities.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC upstream executive director, said,ADNOC is placing AI at the heart of its operations and leveraging industry-leading advanced technologies to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand. The development and deployment of Neuron 5 across our upstream and downstream facilities demonstrates this strategy in action and highlights our continued progress towards our vision to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.”
