As commitments to cut emissions, plastics, waste, and water become standard businesses, the question becomes how companies are actualizing those goals. The forefront of innovation in sustainability is going well beyond simple recycling or carbon offset. This year’s most innovative companies in sustainability are pursuing innovative paths — from growing fresh produce sustainably to enhancing fuel efficiency.

For promoting circular economy

Dulsco has made sustainability a key component of all its operations, and diverted more than 1 million tonnes of waste for Dubai Expo 2020 by creating a three-bin stream system that separated waste into landfill waste, mixed recyclables, and organic waste.

The integrated solutions provider has commissioned a new material recovery facility in Dubai capable of sorting 240 tonnes of multiple waste streams daily. Its environmental solutions span the waste services domain, from the community and industrial waste collection to recycling and medical and hazardous waste management. Its Refuse Derived Fuel plant can process more than 70,000 tonnes of waste per annum, equivalent to 7,000 garbage trucks diverted away from landfills.

For enhancing fuel efficiency

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has taken the lead as the region’s first fuel retailer to employ solar-powered service stations to introduce the future-forward service station at Expo 2020 Dubai.

To reduce environmental footprint and enhance fuel efficiency, ENOC promotes products and services that meet these goals –it developed green biofuels, high-performance, sustainable lube products, and fuel conservation additives.

For growing fresh produce sustainably

Pure Harvest Smart Farms is a pioneer in deploying AI-guided vertical farms in the GCC; has integrated innovation into its operations by growing fresh produce affordably. Recently, it has scaled its R&D facilities to top up its annual fresh fruit and vegetable production capacity to over 18 million kilograms.

It has partnered with an international indoor vertical farm enterprise to bolster its hybrid greenhouse production and is deploying a homegrown Al-guided robotics solution to create innovative farms optimized by solar energy.
