From the UAE’s metropolitan lifestyle to Oman’s rich cultural heritage, expats in the region prefer residing in cities for various opportunities. 

According to Expat Insider 2023: The World Through Expat Eyes, a few countries in the MENA region were found appealing. Bahrain, ranked ninth globally, was the highest-placed country from the Middle East, with the UAE ranked 11th, Oman 12th, and Saudi Arabia 28th.

This survey by InterNations of expatriates residing in 172 countries evaluated 56 factors across categories such as quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finance, and expat essentials.

Mexico claimed the top spot as the most desirable place for expats, with Spain and Panama coming second and third, respectively.

The UAE scored high in the expat essentials category, including digital life, housing options, and language accessibility. This reaffirms the country’s status as a favorable destination for those seeking an international lifestyle fueled by a thriving economy, job opportunities, and infrastructure.

Among the MENA countries, Oman also received recognition, securing the 12th position globally. Expats lauded the affordable housing options, providing a strong foundation for a fulfilling life abroad.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia ranked 28th globally, ranking high in the working abroad and expat essentials categories. Expats in Saudi Arabia commended the ease of getting around without speaking the local language.

The region’s strong showing highlights its efforts to create inclusive communities, supportive infrastructure, and a high quality of life for expatriates.

Overall, expatriates in the MENA region are drawn to the region’s economic opportunities, cultural diversity, and tolerant societies.
