CYBERSECURITY THREATS

Alongside its product announcements, HP released a cybersecurity report highlighting a surge in attacks exploiting users’ increasing tolerance for multi-step authentication, such as fake CAPTCHA tests. The HP Threat Insights Report exposes campaigns where deceptive authentication challenges were used to deliver malware, including the Lumma Stealer and XenoRAT remote access trojans.

“A common thread across these campaigns is the use of obfuscation and anti-analysis techniques to slow down investigations,” said Patrick Schläpfer, Principal Threat Researcher in the HP Security Lab.

The report also reveals that attackers are using SVG smuggling—embedding malicious JavaScript in image files—and obfuscated Python scripts to deploy remote access trojans (RATs) and info stealers, exploiting Python’s growing adoption.

Additionally, the report found that at least 11% of email threats bypassed email gateway scanners, with executables (43%) being the most common malware delivery method, followed by archive files (32%).

Meanwhile, HP Wolf Security, which isolates threats within secure containers, reported that its customers have safely interacted with over 65 billion email attachments, web pages, and downloaded files without any recorded breaches.

“Multi-step authentication is now the norm, which is increasing our ‘click tolerance,'” said Dr. Ian Pratt, Global Head of Security for Personal Systems at HP Inc.  “To combat increasingly unpredictable threats, organizations should focus on shrinking their attack surface by isolating risky actions – such as clicking on things that could harm them. That way, they don’t need to predict the next attack; they’re already protected.”
