How Saudi Arabia built the world’s most connected road network

Saudi Arabia has ranked first globally in the World Economic Forum’s Road Connectivity Index, highlighting years of investment in transportation infrastructure aimed at improving mobility, boosting tourism, and strengthening connections between the Kingdom’s cities and governorates.

The recognition reflects the rapid expansion of Saudi Arabia’s road network, which now spans more than 73,000 kilometers, making it one of the largest in the region. According to the World Economic Forum, the network has significantly improved connectivity across the country, making travel more efficient and increasing accessibility for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

The Roads General Authority said the road sector has become a key driver of economic development, supporting industries ranging from logistics and trade to tourism as Saudi Arabia advances its Vision 2030 transformation agenda.

Improved connectivity is also expected to play a critical role in facilitating domestic travel and expanding access to emerging tourism destinations across the Kingdom.

Among the regions benefiting from the infrastructure expansion is Al Baha, where a road network spanning more than 1,777 kilometers has significantly improved access to the mountainous destination. The enhanced transportation links are helping position the region as one of Saudi Arabia’s leading mountain tourism hubs while making travel easier for both local communities and visitors.
