Oman launches camelina pilot using recycled water to advance sustainable biofuel production
The initiative aims to advance Oman's green economy by repurposing treated wastewater for sustainable agriculture and clean energy.
Nama Water Services has launched a pilot project to cultivate camelina, a crop widely used in sustainable biofuel production, in partnership with Hema Energy as part of efforts to advance environmental sustainability and support Oman’s green economy ambitions.
The project will use recycled water to irrigate camelina, demonstrating how treated wastewater can be repurposed as a strategic resource to promote sustainable development. The initiative is expected to enhance water and food security, reduce carbon emissions, and support the transition to cleaner energy sources.
A key objective of the pilot is to develop an integrated technical system to measure camelina’s carbon sequestration potential while evaluating the crop’s economic and commercial viability for large-scale cultivation.
Under the partnership, Nama Water Services will supply recycled water for irrigation, while Hema Energy will oversee the project’s technical implementation, operations, and data analysis.
The initiative is supported by several national institutions. Sultan Qaboos University will provide research expertise and technical validation, the Environment Authority will oversee environmental compliance, and the Oman Net Zero Center will help ensure the project aligns with the Sultanate’s net-zero targets.
The pilot reflects Oman’s growing focus on integrating water reuse, renewable energy, and climate innovation to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen the circular economy, and unlock new opportunities in the low-carbon economy.
