Majid Al-Remaihi’s short film And Then They Burn The Sea has made history in Qatar’s film industry by being the nation’s first entry to be nominated for an Oscar. Produced by the Doha Film Institute, the film follows the director through his mother’s deteriorating memory loss. The movie was also shown at the Locarno Film Festival in 2021 and took home the Silver Tanit Award at the Carthage Film Festival and Best Short at Vienna Shorts. Al-Remaihi demonstrates the limitless potential of the up-and-coming Qatari filmmakers as they forge a path to the global audience.
