Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini had her hopes of winning Olympic gold crushed by the onset of war in her home country. Fleeing Syria with her sister Sara in 2015, they embarked on a dangerous journey by boat from Turkey to Greece, during which they had to push the overcrowded dinghy to safety for three hours. The sisters made it to Germany, where they settled and were later reunited with their parents. Her survival story has been turned into a Netflix film, Swimmers, inspiring millions. Mardini’s resilience led to her becoming the youngest UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Today, she leverages her platform to advocate for refugees worldwide.
