Abu Dhabi has implemented a solution to safeguard the night sky while advancing sustainability across the emirate.

Through the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy, launched by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, efforts to curb light pollution are underway. Under the theme “Discover the Beauty of Abu Dhabi’s Sky,” an extensive awareness campaign seeks to educate residents and visitors about the significance of preserving the night sky.

The initiative will promote sustainable lighting systems in line with the International Dark Sky Association. Additionally, it aims to protect the natural environment and wildlife, support scientific research in astronomy, improve public health, and foster sustainable development.

“This policy establishes a comprehensive framework for responsible urban development, fostering awareness and adherence to sustainable lighting practices. By promoting a harmonious coexistence between our urban landscape and celestial wonders, we aim to enhance residents’ quality of life and contribute to a global movement to preserve natural beauty,” says Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Operations Affairs at the Department of Municipalities and Transport.

The plan applies to public and private sectors but excludes festivals and events. It focuses on indoor and outdoor lighting equipment and monitors the degree of light spillage.

To achieve the policy’s objectives, cooperation from all relevant parties is required to adhere to the outlined conditions alongside applicable manuals and the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System. Those who violate the policy will be given a grace period to adjust their lighting accordingly.
