Clean energy reaches 45% in Abu Dhabi. Efficiency drive targets 22% lower electricity use by 2030
The Emirate is accelerating solar expansion, energy efficiency measures, and grid resilience investments to support its Net Zero 2050 goals.
Abu Dhabi has announced that clean and renewable sources now account for more than 45% of its energy mix, as the emirate continues to invest in solar power, battery storage, and energy efficiency measures.
The update was shared by Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, in a statement marking Earth Day, observed annually on April 22.
This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” reflects the growing importance of resource sustainability in economic and operational planning, Al Jarwan said.
He noted that Abu Dhabi is building an integrated energy and water system focused on efficiency, reliability, and sustainability to meet rising demand while maintaining economic competitiveness and supply security.
According to Al Jarwan, Abu Dhabi is on track to increase the share of clean and renewable energy in its mix to 60% in the coming years. This progress is being driven by the continued expansion of solar power capacity, with more than three gigawatts added annually, along with investments in battery storage and advanced infrastructure.
The Department of Energy is also developing new regulatory frameworks to encourage more efficient energy production and consumption. These efforts include expanding the use of artificial intelligence in the energy sector and introducing solar self-supply policies for residential users.
Al Jarwan said these initiatives are expected to improve efficiency, reduce pressure on the electricity grid, and strengthen overall system resilience.
At the same time, Abu Dhabi is continuing to implement energy and water efficiency strategies aimed at reducing electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 32% by 2030.
The emirate plans to invest nearly AED 160 billion over the next five years in projects designed to deliver measurable sustainability outcomes.
Al Jarwan said the transformation aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision by combining innovation, resource efficiency, and long-term planning in partnership with local and international stakeholders.
He added that Abu Dhabi’s approach reinforces the UAE’s position as a global model for technology-driven sustainability solutions that enhance system efficiency and resilience.
