As flying comes back with a vengeance, airports are packed with travelers pulling their wheeled suitcases behind them. It’s such a common sight that we don’t often consider whether the well-designed luggage that has made traveling so much easier is sustainable.

Emirates is launching a limited-edition luggage collection made from upcycled materials from retrofitted aircraft. 

The collection, which features a variety of suitcases, backpacks, handbags, and accessories, is scheduled to go on sale in 2024.

The materials used to craft the pieces were gathered from Emirates A380 and 777 aircraft, including aluminum headrests, leather from couches in the A380 onboard lounge, seatbelts, and even fur from the captain’s seat.

“We knew these materials could be given a second life because they are originally of very high quality,” said Ahmed Safa, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President for Engineering.

From 16 retrofitted aircraft, more than 14,000 kilograms of materials have already been recovered, with the potential to recover up to 270 kilograms of leather and 627 kilograms of seat fabric per aircraft as the project continues.

Customers may request personalized laser engraving on some bags, suitcases, and document holders. 

Emirates’s tailors designed and made them in a cabin workshop at the Emirates Engineering Centre in Dubai.

The items will be on sale in Emirates Official Stores, and all proceeds will be donated to disadvantaged children through the Emirates Airline Foundation.
